New Project to Determine the Presence of Invasive Species in the Seychelles |
02/05/2004 |
IUCN, in collaboration with the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology and the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries, have developed a new project to survey several harbours and other areas around the inner granitic islands of the Seychelles for invasive marine species that have been introduced by shipping traffic visiting the country. Surveys for invasive species on coral reefs will be conducted in conjunction with regular CORDIO monitoring at several permanent monitoring sites. Preliminary surveys conducted last week while the project was being planned and developed revealed the presence of several introduced species on pilings in the Victoria Harbour. The project will be implemented later in the year with the results disseminated by year’s end.
